The instagram trend that never seems to die down, the method your favorite celebrity uses to get her waist oh so tiny. Waist training! The seemingly popular tactic to slim down; you can wear it while you workout, while you eat, while you sleep and it magically makes your waist diminish. So does waist training work? Let's debunk this myth.
So first let's describe what a waist trainer is "it's a referred to the use of steel boned corsets to develop an exaggerated hourglass shape. By cinching a corset tighter and tighter, the waist trainer corset was able to pull in a woman's floating ribs and even do a bit of rearranging of her internal organs to effectively reduce the circumference of her waist. The effect is semi-permanent, requiring continued corseting even after the goal reduction has been achieved."
Traditionally used by having a corset the trend has been around for ages to help alter the shape of a women's appearance. Today the trend is still around but it has taken a different toll. Today the corset has been replaced with a "waist-trainer." Typically made out of latex or cotton, a waist trainer is made to do the same waist cinching task as a corset without the steel bone.
How Does it Work
Recommended use is gradual, with wearing it the first day running between 2-3 hours and by day 7 up to 10 hours. Some people like to wear regular waist trainer during exercises and their are special ones designed to be worn during exercise. Waist trainers work by forcing your body into it's shape (the hourglass), your body then gradually adjust to it moving your organs in and creating the "coke bottle" curves of your dreams. It also is said to help control your eating by making it almost impossible to overeat due to the restrictions.
Does It Work
The answers are varied with many tooting the results they have received while others have no results. Waist trainer companies always have testimonials and celebrity endorsed products guaranteed to work.
As my instagram feed is filled with the waist training frenzy I decided to try it out and see what the hype was about. I bought a highly praised latex trainer from a popular site and followed the directions to a tee. I tried it out for 1 month and was diligent in it's use.

- Couldn't eat much
- Easy to clean
- Left imprints all over my stomach
- Couldn't eat much
- Bruised sides and stomach
- No long-term result
- Easily seen through clothes; no discretion
So it is safe to say this trend didn't leave the best impression for me at all...
In addition to being uncomfortable, my waist trainer left marks all over my body, no bueno. As for it's claim for making your waist smaller, I cannot concur. Although I did not wear it for the a full 6 months to see changes, I did not really see it being a practical method to get a smaller waste. It did temporarily give me the appearance of a smaller waist but these results only lasted a few hours. It's claim that it controls hunger however, is very true and can be troublesome. I was under eating all day because my stomach could not expand enough to eat as much as I should. If you tend to overeat this could be really helpful for you, however if you could be cheating yourself out of necessary nutrients.
If you want better posture and some eating controlling contraption, maybe invest in a waist trainer. But, overall I say skip the trend all together. It seems practical but in reality wearing something that causes such great restrictions is no way to live for anyone. Eating and working out to get a smaller waist is a better option. Waste training gets 2 thumbs down from me.
