What is Soy Milk?
Soy milk is a non-dairy milk, made with crushed soybeans and water. It is usually made for people who have a dairy intolerance. Soybeans are high in protein, vitamin b-6, magnesium, riboflavin and thiamin and is a plant based milk meaning it's naturally low in fats with very little cholesterol.
Soy Milk Benefits
Soy milk is low calories and high in protein (good for keeping you full longer.) It can also be a source of vitamins and although it does not naturally have the same amounts of calcium or vitamin D that milk has, most brands fortify their milk with them. If you have any lactose allergies, this is a great substitute for milk. Soy milk also has dietary fiber and it even has omega-3 fatty acids, unlike regular milk.
So How is it Not Better…
Even with all the nutritional benefits why isn’t soy milk better than regular? Let’s compare:
Regular milk is higher in calories than soy milk and has more saturated fat. But, there are fat-free and reduced fat versions of milk. Soy is high in protein, but regular milk still has more protein than soy milk has. Regular milk also contains 30% of your daily value of calcium and 25% of vitamin D, naturally. They both raise concern with allergies, some people have a hard time digesting lactose and soy is a common allergy amongst people. And if you choose organic or natural options, you can bypass the GMO concern.
Soy milk has a high rep for being a lot healthy than regular milk but in reality it is not. Fortified soy milk is very similar to milk and barely has “better” attributes, but soy milk is not a "real" food. Soy milk is a man-made version of milk, which raises concerns that it's GMO. If you do not have any lactose issues, milk is the better option overall for quality, whole foods, calcium, vitamin D, and protein. So the final verdict is…. it is up to you (but real milk is better) !
